This web site is dedicated to disseminate products and outcomes of three companion projects (TR-573, TR-583 and TR-584) funded by the Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) on Load and Resistance factor Design (LRFD) of driven piles.

Goal:

The overarching goal of the projects is to develop fundamental knowledge and advance LRFD procedures for driven piles in the State of Iowa and the nation.

Objectives:

To achieve the overarching goal, the projects included the following objectives:

1) Formulate a quality-assured electronic database (PILOT) with information comprising of both static and dynamic data for driven piles

2) Establish a less ambiguous approach to categorize soil profiles as clay, sand or mixed soils

3) Perform static and dynamic testing, including restrikes on piles

4) Investigate pile setup in cohesive soils

5) Develop LRFD resistance factors for static analysis, dynamic analysis and dynamic formulas for driven piles using the data available in PILOT

6) Address construction control issues and integrate them into the design methods

7) Establish LRFD guidelines for driven piles to be used by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and Iowa County offices.
